REMOVING THE INNER POLLUTION
Environmentalists have been sounding the alarm bells for a long time about impending ecological disasters on earth. The clamour about environmental pollution and global warming has turned into real concern now that we have begun to see their far-reaching harmful effects.
Even though environment-friendly initiatives have been high on global and national agendas for sometime now, there is a long way to go in upgrading our environmental awareness. As a fallout of the increasing ecological degradation, nations have been devising environment- friendly technologies. Nonetheless, the rate at which environmental pollution and global warming have accelerated over the last few years it is clear that the damage done to our planet is irreversible. All the measures that we are putting in now are little steps of mitigation and damage control.
Till now governments have been adopting the gloss approach to fix the ecological crisis. We need to look deeper and remedy the cause of pollution. Efforts must be made to encourage people to adopt a lifestyle that augments environmental sustainability. We need to educate people about how to make choices that would reduce pollution and sustain a clean environment.
Spirituality has always played a vital role in environmental sustainability. All ancient societies in India supported their environment with lifestyles that were based on values like respect for nature, simplicity and harmony. If we live simply and in harmony with our inner and outer nature, it will create a sustainable world.
Instead of flaunting a consumerist lifestyle based on products that harm the environment, we can make choices that promote conservation of energy and a cleaner environment. We can begin by setting a trend in promoting a lifestyle based on simplicity , cooperation and harmony rather than chasing one based on greed, competition and glamour.
At a deeper level, the problem of environmental degradation is related to the decline of spiritual values. It is not just a debate of depleting natural resources and non-renewable energy. It stems from the core of human life – the soul – which has been polluted with vices like greed, ego and anger.
This world is an interplay of material and spiritual energies. The material world is intimately linked to the subtle world of awareness, attitude, thoughts and feelings. We can only make a lasting impact on our environment by addressing the subtle inner awareness that informs the outer environment.
Nature reflects human nature.
The violation of the innate qualities of the human soul, such as truth, purity, peace, love and respect, has led to the violation of natural law and order.
As the harmony within the soul got disrupted, the harmony between nature’s forces also got disturbed.
There is so much violence and discord in human minds that nature too has started striking discordant notes in the form of storms, earthquakes, hurricanes and famine. Poisoned feelings in human hearts have poisoned the air, water and soil on earth.
There have been interesting studies on the effect of thoughts and feelings on matter such as water, plants and animals.
In fact, the vision of a new world wherein everyone is blessed with health, happiness and prosperity can only be created with the clean mental and emotional energy of viceless souls. Unless we rid our minds and hearts of vices such as lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego, we cannot create a world wherein nature and humans exist in harmony and abundant health and happiness.
We are radiating energy all the time. The world around us is a reflection of our attitudes, mood and feelings.
We have all seen the image of a stone dropping into water and the ripples that are created. Similarly we are all constantly sending out ‘vibes’ or subtle energy of thoughts and influencing our environment.
Conversely, we are also getting influenced by other people’s energy. Any negative or positive event is a result of such exchange of energy and the ripple effect between humans.
If we want to live in a positive environment, we can create it. How? By respecting other humans, by seeing good in others and being aware of our own innate goodness.
Every human soul is originally pure and viceless. That is why the solution to pollution is connected to the answer to the question, Who Am I?
When we see ourselves and others as pure spiritual beings, we tend to radiate and others tend to reflect back pure feelings of love and peace.
The energy shift in the world also requires that we connect to an abundant, constant and imperishable source of such purity and goodness – God. He is one Being whose energy remains constantly clean and pure because he never goes through the cycles of change that affect human souls. Meditation is that invisible channel that facilitates a constant flow of the purest of the pure, cleanest of the clean energy from God, who is the Supreme Father of all souls.
It’s time now to put our inner and outer nature in order. We need to align our lives with the highest spiritual codes of conduct, which promote respect for nature and every living being. Our spiritual values uphold each human endeavour as a service to God and His creation. Instead of arrogance we need humility and the attitude of serving others. Instead of selfish desires we need to imbibe contentment, simplicity, compassion and generosity.
